Michael, Polly and Eileen are all secretly worried that something they each did might have altered the flow of time, even though that was thought to be impossible.Īfter finding himself in the middle of the evacuation of Dunkirk (instead of observing), Michael managed to save the life of one soldier (who, in turn, saved the lives of 591 others) Polly saved the life of a fellow shop girl, living in downtown London and Eileen held back information that kept two street urchins (part of a horde of child evacuees over which she had charge while living in the English countryside) from boarding a ship that was eventually sunk by U-boats.… there's a very palpable, somewhat ironic fear here, because in a way these three are more frightened of the Blitz than the stalwart contemporaries (or "contemps" as the historians call them).… So for a moment, there's a justifiable and interesting suspense.
